Wish was once one of the most downloaded shopping apps in the world, but it has suffered a dramatic fall from grace. Founded in 2010 by Peter Szulczewski and Danny Zhang and later listed on NASDAQ via ContextLogic Inc, the platform connects US and European consumers with predominantly Chinese sellers offering rock-bottom prices. The premise was always that you were sacrificing quality and speed for price — but the reality has proved far worse than even that trade-off would suggest.
In 2021, Wish was temporarily banned from the French government's official search recommendations after French consumer watchdog DGCCRF found that 95% of tested products contained dangerous materials or failed safety standards. The app was also removed from Google Play and the Apple App Store in France. While global operations continued, the episode severely damaged the brand's credibility. Counterfeit goods — fake branded trainers, watches, electronics — are rampant.
